If you are looking into new installation or rewiring of electrics, you should ask about the electrical installation condition reports. All companies should give them out when checking the current condition of your electrics, whether in a home or business. What are these reports and what do they mean for your needs?

What Is and Who Should Perform the Electrical Installation Condition Reports?

The reports generally give the “what” in the title. It is a report that tells you the condition of the electrical installation. There will be various codes, but in short it tells you of any safety issues and defects, along with any deviations from any current electrical regulations.

Only someone qualified and experienced should do these reports. The electrician needs to have a full knowledge of all the installations possible.

How Long Will It Take?

The length of time for the report will depend on the size of the house or building. A small home can take just a few hours, because there are fewer sections to check. A large building can take a few weeks! The latter is the case for industrial and commercial electrics.

The electrics will need to be switched off from the mains to protect the safety of the electrician. This will also allow the professional to test the circuit. It is important to inform anyone else in the building if this is going to take place, especially in industrial buildings where others outside of the business may be affected.

Do You Need a Report?

Businesses must have electrical installation condition reports. Buildings designed for multiple occupancy, whether it is an apartment block or a rented home, will also need to have these checks. It has been a requirement for five years. Those in privately rented properties may need them, depending on your area. If you own your home and live in it, it is not a requirement yet.

Not everyone will need to have a report completed. It is important that you check whether you do to make sure you are within the law and keeping the people within the building safe.
